Favorite TweetStuff (week ending 02/04/11)

It’s Friday! Yippee! Every week I rescue items from my Tweet stream that are funny, gorgeous, odd, or just strike me as special for some reason. It’s a mixed lot this week — enjoy!

Note: I do not in any way mock the seriousness of what is transpiring in Egypt even as I write. I do, however, freely mock “news organizations” who can’t buy a clue, and who’ve done their best to try to change our collective national identity from “citizens” to “consumers”.

@pourmecoffee “Egyptians camped out in Cairo. For Americans, think of it as like the release of new Apple product if Apple made freedom.”

@Khaledtron This is Epic, Fox News has no idea where Egypt is on a map. #jan25

New Blog Added to Dissociation Blog Showcase! (DBS)

Special Request: If you find value in this blog showcase, please add the Dissociation Blog Showcase link to your blogroll so others can find it. Thanks!

We have amazing writers amongst us who give insight and hope to anyone struggling with dissociation, or to their loved ones. It’s a brain trust, and I treasure it. When I find new blogs, I update the Dissociation Blog Showcase (DBS) on Sunday evenings. Tonight I’ve added the following new blog (which has a great title! :)):

You mean the sky isn’t blue?!

Please use the DBS link above to access this blog, and check out the entire directory of (currently) 188 dissociation-related blogs!

As always, be careful and safe. Many of these blogs do not provide trigger warnings, nor are they obligated to do so.

Still on the way: I’ve received requests for inclusion of some DID (Dissociative Identity Disorder) information and awareness sites, which are not “blogs” per se. I’m still planning to add a new section for these types of sites to the index, so please let me know if you have any favorites. (The two sites currently in the queue are DID World Map and DIDiva.com.) Thanks!

If you, or someone you know, experiences dissociation and blog about it, write to me with the URL at

sarah.e.olsonATgmailDOTcom

I review each blog before adding it to the Showcase. Thanks so much for the feedback and well-wishes for this project!

Best Tweets for Trauma and PTSD Survivors (week ending 01/28/11)

Best Tweets for Trauma and PTSD Survivors is a weekly Friday feature. My selections are entirely subjective, and I know it will never be possible to include every great resource tweeted. But I can try! I’ve personally read all tweeted links, and believe them to be of great value.

Disclaimer: I am in no way responsible for content found on any other website. Stay safe, and don’t follow links if you believe you might be triggered by them. Also, I will not be re-checking links from older Best Tweets posts, and if the site’s archived URL is different from the one I’ve provided here, you may need to do a search on their site.

NEW and REALLY COOL: You can now “like” and “share” this post everywhere with the touch of a button or two at the end of the linked tweets! Feel free to do any or all of that! (And thanks.)

There is more of substance in a tennis ball than in the small self’s delusions of permanence. It’s all changing, all the time. The greater risk is to mistake a memory or an idea for the way things really are, for then you risk missing the moment. At your essence you know what is true risk and what is ego’s games, and you know that risk is necessary because on the other side of the risk lies freedom.” Note: He’s not advocating stupid risks. @MentalHelpNet Overcoming Social Anxiety with Mindfulness Therapy
[SEO: “When you develop a mindfulness-based relationship with your inner emotions, your anxiety and fear, you set up a completely different inner environment that greatly facilitates transformation, resolution and healing of the emotional constructs of anxiety and fear. The simple fact is that reactivity inhibits change, while mindfulness promotes change and healing. You first learn to recognize the impulse to react with fear or panic as it arises, and to respond at a very early stage to the impulse with mindful-attention. This simple action stops the reactivity proliferating into worry and negative thinking, and opens up a brief moment of choice, a space before the reaction takes off. This is the beginning of the de-conditioning process. With practice you can develop and lengthen this space, especially in mindfulness meditation sessions, which become practice grounds for developing new ways of responding to your emotions and the associated external situations.”]

Fearless Nation: First in PTSD Support in Second Life

In my Best Tweets for Trauma and PTSD Survivors post this last Friday, I mentioned the T2 Virtual PTSD Experience project newly offered in Second Life to veterans, their families, and friends. I commented that something like this for civilians would be extremely valuable. Well, guess what? It’s already available, and has been since 2009.

I was contacted by Colleen M. Crary, M.A., Founder and Executive Director of Fearless Nation PTSD Support, who rightfully wants it made known that Fearless Nation was first (or one of the first) in Second Life to offer PTSD support in a virtual environment. (And note, their website (link above) is a treasure of PTSD resources as well.)

Other than to make some of her links clickable, I have not amended any of what she sent to me. There are three embedded videos, the first of which is, in my opinion, the most informative. It provides a video view (as opposed to screen shots) of Second Life with a voice-over which details the Fearless Nation Second Life site. The second video appears to be taken from a 2010 Fearless Nation Second Life event with (primarily) DJs making dance music, and the third, while informational, consists entirely of still screen shots of the Fearless Nation retreat in Second Life. There are also links to pertinent information pages on Fearless Nation’s website.

Disclaimer: I do not have a Second Life account, and don’t have the time now to devote to one, so I have not visited this site personally. I’d love to receive feedback from anyone who has been there, or who visits as a result of this post.

Many thanks to Colleen for bringing this to my attention! I invite anyone to send me PTSD resources which you find valuable, and I will do my part to promote them.

Fearless Nation PTSD Support – First in Second Life :-)

Hello,

I have built and run two PTSD support sims in Second Life since 2009, and the “Psychological Health Island” created by the National Center for Telehealth and Technology, also known as T2, has had representatives visit my sims or islands for the last 12 months, taking pictures and information, and they have imitated many of the offerings I have created there.

I would like my organization to be recognized as the first or one of the first to have made a safe place for trauma patients to recover.

My 501c3 organization, Fearless Nation PTSD Support, has virtual group meetings, events, educational and awareness-raising areas specifically designed and science-based for trauma recovery. You can find out more by seeing our press page and photographs and video of our sims/islands. We help many people with PTSD, their families too, and have been doing so for quite some time.

It clearly explains what will (should) happen if you or a loved one call 911 for possible suicide, as well as your rights as a mental health patient. We have all, of course, heard horror stories of people receiving incompetent (at best) treatment in this situation. Being proactive, for yourself or your loved one, and knowing in advance what you have a right to expect, will go a long way toward preventing a bad outcome.]

It requires you to sign up for a free basic Second Life account to join their virtual environment. “‘We created an environment that lets people learn by doing, rather than reading text and watching videos on two-dimensional websites,’ said Kevin Holloway, the psychologist who led T2’s virtual world development. ‘They can learn something new each time they visit.'” You can view its full description and benefits at T2 Virtual PTSD Experience, which also walks you through the steps to joining Second Life.]

(While the blog focuses on “women’s memoirs”, c’mon guys, you can write, too! :)) The blogger here isn’t necessarily talking about healing from trauma, but much of her examples of healing through writing apply nevertheless, or may provide inspiration for you to take it another step.]

@SarahEOlson2009 Have You Lost a Part of Yourself?
[SEO: Excellent post! Defines four essential steps to rediscovering what you have lost: (1) recognize the missing parts; (2) identify the losses; (3) explore how you got off track; and (4) reclaim your lost self. Each step provides thought-provoking questions or exercises to help determine the answers. It acknowledges that trauma survivors need to go about this at their own pace, with help, if necessary. “New and effective treatment approaches for healing trauma have emerged. These include the use of techniques like breath and heart rate regulation, meditation, imagery, biofeedback, energy release work, hypnosis, Neuro-Linguistic Programming, Information Processing Techniques (EMDR, EFT, TFT, TAT), cognitive behavioral therapy, and others. You are not stuck with the impact of trauma. Trauma can be healed.”]
